Where it comes from
Yūgen entered Japanese through Chinese Buddhist and Daoist writing and was already used by waka poets before it reached the stage. Zeami Motokiyo (1363–1443) then made it the highest ideal of noh, arguing in treatises such as Fūshikaden (begun around 1400) that extreme restraint — a small movement, a held pause — suggests far more feeling than anything openly shown.
